Our history

Locor started in Germiston in 2007 with a practical focus: keep electric motors, drives and related equipment working for plants and workshops that cannot afford avoidable downtime. From the first rewind job to today’s wider field support, the business has grown step by step under Sibusiso Mthembu’s leadership.

Our history

2007: A Practical Start in Germiston

Locor began in 2007 as a local South African repair business serving factories, workshops and maintenance teams in Germiston and the wider Ekurhuleni area. The early work centred on electric motor rewinding, basic fault finding and careful workshop repairs for machines that had failed under load, dust, vibration or heat.

From the start, the approach was straightforward: strip the unit properly, assess the damage, record what was found and repair it with care. That meant paying attention to winding condition, bearings, insulation and the signs that point to a deeper electrical issue rather than just a single failed part.

Building the Workshop Around Real Site Needs

As more call-outs came in from Johannesburg, Boksburg and Kempton Park, the workshop grew around the needs of plant rooms and production lines. The team learned to handle a wider range of motor sizes and drive faults, while also supporting clients who needed help during shutdowns, breakdowns and scheduled maintenance stops.

By this stage the work was no longer only about rewinding a motor. It also involved bearing checks, insulation testing, panel cleaning, cable checks and alignment checks, because a unit that returns to service must be ready for the conditions on site not just the test bench.

  • Motor removal and safe handling for workshop repair
  • Drive inspection and site reporting for maintenance teams
  • Commissioning support after repair or replacement

From Motor Work to Variable Speed Drive Repair

As South African plants became more dependent on controlled speed and process consistency, variable speed drive repair became a regular part of Locor’s work. Drives exposed to dust, poor ventilation, unstable supply conditions and load-shedding related switching events often need careful inspection, cleaning and component-level fault finding.

The team built up practical experience in drive diagnosis, panel checks and installation support, always with the understanding that electrical work must be done by qualified people under proper lockout procedures. That is not just good practice, it protects people and equipment on site.

Leadership That Kept the Work Grounded

Sibusiso Mthembu, the Managing Director, has kept the business focused on dependable repair work and direct communication with customers. Under his leadership, Locor developed a team structure that supports both workshop and field service work, with each person handling a clear part of the process.

Annelie van Wyk manages operations, Thabo Nkosi leads winding work, Megan Naidoo handles drive repair, Johan Pretorius coordinates field service and Lerato Molefe keeps customer support moving. That mix of roles matters because industrial repair work often needs quick decisions, good records and proper follow-through, especially when a plant is waiting on a machine to return to service.

Extending Support Across Gauteng and Beyond

From Germiston, Locor now supports customers across Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, Pretoria and Vereeniging, with field work that also reaches Durban when the job calls for it. Many clients contact the team through the enquiry form on the contact page when they need help with shutdown planning, spares assessment or on-site fault reporting.

That wider reach grew naturally from years of handling repeat breakdowns, planned maintenance work and site-based inspections. The same careful process used in the workshop also applies on site: confirm the fault, isolate properly, check the cable and control condition, then decide whether the motor or drive needs repair, replacement or further testing.

Today: Experience Applied to Every Job

Today, Locor’s history is reflected in the way each job is handled. A small motor with a burnt winding, a drive with intermittent trips, or a unit that keeps failing after service all need methodical work and honest feedback. The team does not rush the diagnosis, because a missed detail can lead to another breakdown soon after the unit is back in service.

Clients in Germiston, Boksburg, Kempton Park and nearby areas rely on that steady approach when they need motor rewinding, bearing replacement, insulation testing or drive repair. The work is practical, the communication is clear, and the aim remains the same as in 2007: keep machinery running efficiently and safely, with the right people doing the right electrical work.
